LOVE HAS COME

Love, a word we have all seen used in all contexts. We use it for everything from loving a person to loving a particular water brand. It may have lost a sort of value or we may think everything is worthy of being ascribed that value. We won’t dive too deep into that today. We’re here to remember what love means.

Love in the scriptures is something much more than a feeling we get when we eat a baconeggandcheese (in its proper new york spelling) or when we get our frappadappacinnos from Starbucks.

This is what Advent is about “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.” 1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭9‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

Within Scripture we see Love is not merely a sensation we feel. But instead love is the acting out of a profound and true commitment to another soul. God displays His commitment to His World by sending a Savior to save it. A baby.

Our savior, the one we focus all our affections on in this season, mentioned love also in this way. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

Jesus arrives and redefines the word love by moving forward with the Father’s plan. A plan that ultimately leads all the way to the cross.

And so we see two beautiful moments of love:

A baby in a wooden manger, to a man on a wooden cross.

Jesus, being our savior in both instances!

That is the essence of love.

Let us be moved, empowered and changed by the love of God that came to us in the person of Jesus Christ.

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)
